In absentia

“It is on absence that I feed, the missing body,
the vacant chair, the hole in the memory
where a word or a face should have been.”

Sampurna Chattarji
Absent Muses

I dug into my bag yesterday looking for something insignificant. I found half a dozen ravalgon candies there. They have been lying there for quite sometime now. I remember distinctly when and where I picked them up. Also why.

They reminded me of you.

They were served after a big meal of steaks and iced tea, on a small steel plate. They were arranged around a kutty bowl which carried the bill. They were replacing the sugar coated saunf that generally comes along with it.

And I remember hesitating before picking them all. What would the people think? An old lady who loves plastic covered candies? But I fought that feeling. I picked them all.

Because they reminded me of you.
